Mason wandered through the aisles of yet another cookie-cutter supermarket. They all carried the exact same products, used the same tile and fluorescent lighting, smelled the same, with the same boring customers in them. The only difference was that Supermarket A sold their items a marginal amount cheaper than Supermarket B. And yet people insisted that the one he was in was "high class". Snorting, Mason eyed an obnoxiously dressed woman with a large backside who was bending over to look at a package of sliced meats four aisles away. No one was watching, and she had left her purse in her unattended cart.
The cart wasn't that far away. Closing his eyes, Mason reaching out his hand, feeling the familiar tingle, the odd sensation of detachment, and the thrill of claiming his prize. Pulling the purse through the void he had created, he quickly riffled through it finding her wallet and emptying its contents into his pocket. Glancing up to make sure everything was fine, he noted that the woman was still trying to decide between New York Strip Steak or Ribeye. Letting out a small sigh, he once more reached out, purse in hand, concentrating on the cart. This time he saw his hand disappear into a ripple mid-air. It wavered, reminding him of the way that hot asphalt rippled the air if you looked at just the right angle. He watched as his hand and the purse reappeared in the cart just as she had made her decision.
Panicking, Mason dropped the purse in and yanked his hand out of the portal, turning and running down the aisle afterwards. The woman, surprised at seeing a disembodied hand reaching for her purse, let out a shriek. Slowing down so as to not look suspicious, Mason approached the front doors of the store.

"You have a date with Destiny" the old woman chuckled. Irene was waiting by the front door of the store. She had seen everything, she had seen young Mason make a hundred different choices. She had seen the outcome of his acceptance, how well he developed into one of the most powerful mutants among their kind. Irene had even seen where the man had cursed her out and in the most extreme vision actually struck the woman down for trying to stop him from leaving the store. Knowing which words to speak and how to act out her part in the scene took some adjusting.
Irene Adler; aka Destiny. The blind mutant with the ability to perceive future events, she had a way to divine multiple choice and see them through to their outcome. She had waited patiently as an old woman with many years of experience does. There had been visions of this one before, they had been muddled and confusing at first. Much like the path Mason was on himself, if he was to have someone shepherd him in the right direction, the boy known as Shift would have himself quite the life.
"You are right, you could make a better life for yourself. One involving more than a few wads of cash. You may not believe me, infact I've seen how you doubt.." Irene lowered her dark spectacles, revealing her white milky orbs for eyes. She demonstrated how fast she was by producing the wallet of a man who just entered the store without even facing him to swipe it. "I may not have eyes in the back of my head, or a pair in the front for that matter, but I can see possibilities. You my inept and very young friend, have a possibility infront of you." Irene opened the wallet removed the few bills inside and handed it over to Shift.
"If you would like to develop your skills further and have a purpose. One that can see you with more money than you may care to need. I could point you in the right direction." Without waiting for the young man to follow Irene stepped outside of the store and walked around the corner waiting on the response she had gambled was the one that she had forseen.

Mason had been more than startled at the woman's appearance, let alone her monologue. But he he had since learned, especially from attempting to master his abilities, not to discount everything that people said. There were mutant Hate-rallies all around Bayville and New York, so why should he be the only one with awesome powers?
He wanted to be suspicious of the woman but her display of snatching the wallet convinced him. Stunned, he took the money she handed him. Before he had a chance to say anything though, she was headed out the door.
"Wait," he called, running after her, "who are you? How do you know me? How do you know about what I can do?" So many questions ran through his head, he was having trouble sorting them all out. They tumbled through his lips, getting jumbled and mangled into one long, breathless sentence. "And how do I sign up?"

Irene angled her head to the side, there was a lot of questions to cover and for Mason's sake she would keep it simple. She smiled at the young mutant and started walking at a moderate pace, her thick black buckled shoes clipping happily this way and that as she stepped. "Come, let me take you for a walk.." for an old bird Irene was very active and had a fitness that defied her aged appearance. "My name is Irene Adler, I also happen to go by the rather interesting moniker Destiny." The woman stepped off the footpath and onto the road.
"I have had several opportunities to get to know you and therefore your amazing abilities, Mason Isaiah Emery. It is safe to say that through my mutant ability to see the future I have known you, before I knew you." The riddle like words made the woman's face break into another crinkled smile. She dared not mention the details of how and when she did infact 'meet' him. In the first instance she asked his name, in another she had stolen Mason's wallet. There was also a number of times where he appeared in the news as a wanted criminal or a suicide case.
Stepping into the middle of the road past cars within seconds of them driving her way. "I am aware of my surroundings in a way that no ordinary blind person would be. In the case of my own destiny, I have seen many different possibilities and try to avoid the rather disastrous ones." She finished crossing the road safe and unscathed. The old woman waited patiently for the young gentleman to catch up and nodded at him before starting to walk casually again leading him on.
"I generally like to cross at the lights, it places a lot less stress on touchy drivers." Now where were her manners, she thought to herself. Stopping and spinning to face Mason, Irene held out her hand. "I'm so sorry, it is nice to formally meet you" She stood there and waited for the warm tactile feeling of flesh in her palm so that she may study the man more closely."If you are indeed so interested in finding out more, I am more than happy to show you."

Mason followed the woman, enrapt at her monologue. He, however, waited for traffic to slow before crossing the street. There was no way she could have known his full name without having the powers she did - no one knew it except him.
"I'm so sorry, it is nice to formally meet you" Mason took her hand, shaking it gently. Although the woman seemed fine, her disability made him assume she was frail.
"Yes," he said eagerly, "I want to know more. I want to learn how to use my powers." He could feel the hunger for conquest within him; the need to be superior, to be special. He would prove to his father that he was someone worthy of attention - that he was better than his brother.

"There is more, a lot more for you. That can all wait, for now we must make haste. There was a security camera in the supermarket, something that I did not foresee until now. There is a man comming.." Adler made a follow me gesture and started to run. There were a few people on the streets, nothing to the blind woman who could easily outstep them before they even made the decision to move this way or that. She very nearly threw herself into a pedestrian when Irene wasn't concentrating but merely stumbled and made to break her fall before getting up again.
If there was any indication of her having weakness herself it was that when she was stressed or in a hurry to make a decision her minds eye was less keen with more and more possibilities playing out in real time before her. Stepping into an alleyway, Irene pressed her shoulders up against the wall and panted heavily. Her chest sank and rose as her lungs sought more air. She waited for the young man to pass before reaching and grabbing for him to step into the alley. "I'm sorry" she breathed between puffs for air. She gulped dryly before continuing "There is a safe house not far from here." She pointed in the direction of the Tower.
It was the housing of the newly banded Brotherhood, just a few blocks down and past another abandonned alleyway in the heart of the Bronx. "That is where we can learn together of your incredible powers. There are others there, ones that can help you to develop." Once the woman had composed herself she started walking again, it would take a bit longer for her to build up the will to run like that, she was an elderly woman afterall!

Mason followed, skulking into the alley with her. He looked in the direction that she pointed, panting himself - half from the run, half from excitement. Finally, he was getting somewhere! Finally, he would have a chance to prove to his father, to the world that he was someone. He nodded enthusiastically, offering the woman his arm to steady herself with.
"I'll go with you, just take me there."

"Thank you" Irene replied after taking the young man's arm. As she had said prior, the Tower wasn't far and it had been her goal the whole time to take him there. "Yes I'll take you" she said softly. When the woman was sufficiently rested enough to move on she lead the way for Mason trouble free towards the sanctuary she had described. There were things that would have to be explained to Emery, but he seemed willing enough for now and so she remained quiet for the remainder of the trip
