"Where did you say this place was? We can't be in the right place - It's way too classy out here," Lila muttered to her longtime friend, peering at a map and a set of directions from behind dark sunglasses, a look of concern on her face,
"Will you relax - The guy obviously has a lot of money, why wouldn't he be out here?" Ali fired back, her own sunglasses forced back into her short, dark hair, as she inspected the numerous properties they were passing. "That said... This is a little bit classy, for a school,"
"Oh, see, now you agree with me," Lila replied, looking indignant, and adding "Now, after we could've taken the right turn-off about twenty minutes ago and been there, by now," She now looked a little smug, rubbing it in that Ali had been wrong and she was right - A rarity.
"Yeah? Well, funny, because I think this is it," Ali muttered with a grin, giving Lila the finger as she turned into a driveway. On the gates up ahead, a plaque read 'The Xavier Institute for Gifted Children'. Lila immediately fell silent, and glared playfully at Ali.
"What do you mean, 'now I agree' with you, anyway? I'm always agreeing with you?" Ali demanded, as they made their way up the drive toward the building, eyeing Lila carefully.
"Watch the road," Lila insisted, "And you don't always agree with me - What about that thing with that Arthur guy who was shagging you? I told you he couldn't care less about you, but you said he loved you, and look what happened."
"Fuck you!" Ali replied hotly, eyes wide with annoyance. "I admitted I was wrong there, so why don't you shut the fuck up about it?"
"Watch the damn road!" Lila shot back, "And I keep bringing it up so your ego doesn't get so fucking huge again, you skank!"
"Skank?!" Ali demanded, "Last time I checked, you love guys more than I do!"
"WATCH THE ROAD!" Lila screeched, just as they were about to plow into one of the trees lining the road to the Institute. She teleported out in time, leaving Ali to slap on the brakes.
Needless to say, it wasn't enough.
"Ali?" Lila called out cautiously, peering at the car after teleporting back to where she'd been. Dusting her butt off, she approached the car carefully, concerned, her long skirt swaying in the breeze.
"Oh, God," came a moan from the driver's seat, as the door was kicked open, and a groggy Ali emerged, blood pouring from her nose. "Finally, my head hurts more than that time you tried to play Focus to me," she joked. "Crap," she muttered, after setting her eyes on the front end of her car.
"Oh, no," Lila muttered, as she looked at the hood of the vehicle, mashed and made about twenty percent smaller than it had been. "I'm sorry, Ali."
Ali looked glum, but then smiled. Lila knew she was trying to put a brave face on things, but said nothing, instead helping her friend retrieve most of the stuff in the trunk, including her guitar and Ali's bass.
Wandering the rest of the path to the Institute, the two of them said nothing, Ali feeling a desire to yell and scream at Lila, but knowing she had no right to, given her friend had tried to warn her about the impending crash. Lila simply remained silent because she knew how annoyed Ali had been over smaller things in the past.
Finally, as they pressed the doorbell in unison, Ali playfully quipped "Remember, Liles, big wide smiles, otherwise they won't adopt us,"
